Support Your Local Youth Hockey Programs!!!

As a parent of young hockey player - a goalie to be exact - I know the importance of supporting your local youth hockey programs, rink, etc.  Welllll.....our community found out a few short days ago that the Dallas Stars organization is trying to buy out their lease with the City of Duncanville and shut down the Dr Pepper Star Center located in Duncanville, TX.  A meeting was held today at the rink with Stars team President Jeff Cogen and 2 members of his staff to listen to our ideas, concerns, etc.  We had a great turn out and I would like to speak for everyone served by the DV rink when I say thank you to Mr. Cogen and his staff for coming out today to meet with us.

I wish we would have been informed sooner of the financial situation of our rink so we could implement some of the great plans we heard and proposed to the Stars execs today but unfortunately we feel we were hit with this at the 11th hour and you cannot turn around a substantial revenue loss problem in a matter of weeks... or even months.  Now, give us a year, we can make a difference, I know we can but 3 weeks is what we have, if that.

Here's a link to an article about the situation in D'ville: http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/wfaa/latestnews/stories/wfaa080926_mo_starcenter.11cdf4eb6.html

For those of you in the DFW area, please express your support of keeping the DV rink operating ...in a respectful and positive way, of course to Stars management, specifically team president Jeff Cogen.  We need all the help we can get to keep ice for our kids and adult leagues.  The DV rink serves a very large area and I think our passion and loyalty to our rink was underestimated today.  I am doing all I can to make sure my child still has her home rink to go to for hockey.

For those of you not in the DFW area, please support your local youth hockey programs!  Volunteer, recruit new players, etc...

Hockey IS for everyone!!!  http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=27182

Thank you.

WTF, pro sports???

There have been quite a few things lately that I've just had to say "WTF?!" to and frankly, I feel the need to share.  If anyone can explain to me the rationale behind some of this, please… let 'er rip!

1)       Plaxico Burress is about to go to jail for 20-24 months for his weapons possession and accidental shooting (OF HIMSELF) in Manhattan.  He pled guilty and since he popped a cap in himself, there's really nobody to pay off.  2 years behind bars.  No word from the NFL commish yet about ole Plaxico's career but you know 2 years of his career will be a wash cuz his ass will be sitting in jail.  But hey, if they'll let Michael Vick back in the NFL then surely Plaxi has nothing to worry about, right?

2)       Donte Stallworth pled out in June to DUI Manslaughter – as in he was drunk, drove his Bentley and KILLED someone.  His jail term?  30 days….for "normal" people the jail term would be more like 15 years.  Ooooh but he also had to get out his checkbook to write the family of the victim a check as part of a "confidential financial agreement"… oh yeah and he's gotta attend drunk driving education class or some such BS.  His plea agreement will allow him resume his NFL career.

3)       Sooo… can someone please explain to me how Stallworth's plea agreement will allow him to resume his career and he will sit in jail for 30 days and yet he KILLED SOMEONE but Plaxico Burress will be in the slammer for 2 years and he was just packin a piece in a nightclub illegally and shot himself by accident.  Dumb, yes.  Illegal to have the weapon, yes.  Do the punishments here seem to be a bit …. I dunno, completely jacked up?!  And what ever happened to not letting criminals play in the NFL?  Yes, I know that went out the window a long time ago.  I'm not that naïve.

4)       Now on to the NHL… Patrick Kane and his cousin beat up an old man who drives a cab over 0.20 cents.  They should have both been charged with felonies but amazingly enough the charges were downgraded to misdemeanors.  The Kanes were suppose to go before the judge on Monday but the court date was moved so that Patrick could go to the opening day of Olympic camp.  And where is Bettman thru all this?  In fetal position hoping that if he wishes hard enough, it'll all be a bad dream or better yet since Kane is a "likeable" guy nobody will say much if he doesn't suspend him.  Oooooh but wait…. He got indicted by a grand jury and Bettman hasn't so much as said he's disappointed or embarrassed but Sean Avery (oh please, you knew this was coming) uses the phrase "sloppy seconds" and Bettman was on his ass in a nano second making him public enemy #1 handing down a 6 game suspension to boot!   Avery lost half a season over just being crass…he did nothing ILLEGAL and by no means did he beat up an old man or do anything to get him arrested or indicted by a grand jury.  Please – explain this to me.  And for anyone who is gonna say the Kane stuff is "alleged", try again… he was already indicted.

5)       MLB… at this point would it not just be easier to try to name those who have NOT taken performance enhancing drugs than those who have?  Seriously.  I think they should change MLB to MJB (majorly juiced ball) …but what do I know?

6)       NBA… who cares?  I'd sooner watch paint dry than basketball.

7)       Too many athletes getting too much money when they are too young to deal with it and handle the pressure results in all this stupid crap I've just mentioned above.  What happened to the young guys having mentors to keep them from acting stupid?  I take it that is an antiquated notion now or is it that the young players are punks who don't need any fun police around to kill their party buzz?  I think people have grown complacent when it comes to this crap happening with the other pro sports but please….lets at least attempt to keep our beloved NHL decent.  PLEASE.

Jose Theodore's 2mo old son passes away...

No parent should have to bury their child... what a horrific loss to their family.  I don't even have words to express proper condolences for something like this.

Dear Jonas Gustavsson,

On behalf of all the Stars fans, allow me to say a few things...

1) Thank you for waiting until after July 1 to make your "decision" and/or "announcement" that you drank Burke's Kool Aid and basically screwed us over.  We could have made other moves earlier in the free agency frenzy but no, we waited on you.
2) It gives me immense joy to know that you now have to deal with Brian Burke every single day of your life now.
3) As a party bonus, you have to play for Ron Wilson.  Wow, this actually *is* making me feel better.  The Leafs are being investigated for tampering cuz of Wilson's retardation... or was it simply a Burke inspired publicity stunt?  Hard to say really as one is an absolute media whore and the other is dumber than a sack of hair.
4) I hope Vesa Toskala has his best year EVER this coming season and you get no ice time.  You are dead to me now.  *spit*spit*
5) I hope Gerber and/or CuJo give you a special welcome in the parking lot.
6) Enjoy your time in Toronto and good luck in the NHL.  I am gonna sit behind the visiting bench should the Leafs come to the AAC this coming season and make a special sign for you that says "Burke's Jonas Boy Bitch"

Noooooo.... I'm not bitter, not at all.  It is just hockey, right Monster Jonas Brother?

Why July 1st Is Better Than Xmas

1) It is way more exciting
2) Less personal drama and expense!
3) We, as fans, do receive gifts (new players)
4) Some gifts are very, very cool and all we have to do is cheer them on and be thankful to have them!
5) Some gifts suck really hard and we get to boo them and call them mean names which is fun
6) Twitter is way more hoppin' on July 1st than on Dec 25th...duh.
7) Eklund provides far more comic relief around July 1st than he does around the holidays.  (e3, idiot.)
8) The anticipation of waiting to see who your team will get and/or where the big names will go is way better than the anticipation of opening some gift that you already know what it is cuz you had to buy it.
9) Bettman looks like a possessed elf on both days so that's a wash.
10) Big, magical things can happen on July 1st... Dec 25th just involves a fat guy in a red suit.

Dear Dallas Stars,

Ummm Steve Montador was on the market this morning... we need D.  Who got him?  Frickin Buffalo.

I'll say it again... WE NEED D.  I dont mean the old Russian.  I love the old Russian, dont get me wrong.  If we can retain him for less cash and perhaps more incentives so if he breaks a hip again, we arent taking so much of a cap hit, I'm good with that... really, I am.  But I'm thinking more... YOUNGER defensemen.  Like...oooh I dunno.... MONTADOR.

C'mon Nieuwy.  I have faith in you so I'm not gonna throw myself down for a full-on hissy just yet.  If we still had that window licker Hull in charge of ANYTHING, I'd be in full-on hysterics but we dont so I'm ok.

And have I mentioned (in the last 5 minutes) that Eddie Belfour is looking to play again?  I'll go Nancy Kerrigan some people myself if I thought it would get Eddie back on the Stars.  I heart Eddie.  He is and will always be a Dallas Star to me.  :)

When I told Goalie Girl (the 10yo) that Eddie wants to play again AND that he's here in DFW training, I'm not sure who screeched louder - me or her.  Ahhhh good times.  I've trained her well.  LOL

Ok, that is all.

Now go get us some D, Joe!   (and bring back Eddie!!!)

And in case I actually need to say it.... I was just kidding about the whole Nancy Kerrigan thing.  Gosh.  (or was I????)   lol
